As you know, Bob has been putting out archive CDs on his Croydon Municipal label over the last year – he’s now up to his 12th release, which will be SAINT ETIENNE PRESENT SONGS FOR A LONDON WINTER. Bob, Pete and Sarah spent a week huddled around a Dansette (and over a laptop), picking out festive songs from their childhood and a bunch of super Xmassy obscurities.
The compilation is being launched with a bit of a do at ROUGH TRADE EAST on Tuesday NOVEMBER 25th. There will be music played, mince pies, mulled wine, and it’s FREE TO GET IN. Bob will be playing some of his favourite Christmas records and chatting to writer Pete Paphides and DJ Martin Green about what makes the perfect Christmas song.
All of the Croydon Municipal catalogue will be available at a special price. And there will be super-limited Croydon Municipal POSTERS and BADGES for sale.
Bob says “Croydon Municipal is an attempt to make sense of the analogue pop era in a digital world. It digs deep to find wonderful old pop music you may have never heard before.” All those years he has spent in dusty old back rooms, flicking past the Ken Dodd and Kajagoogoo singles, digging for gold… it was all worthwhile!
This November we launch the latest in the hugely successful ‘Saint Etienne Presents’ series with a seasonal title, ‘Saint Etienne Presents: Songs For A London Winter‘.
Sarah Cracknell, Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs have ransacked their record collections, with a helping hand from DJ Martin Green, to give you the sound of Piccadilly in December – baubles, bangles, tinsel and whisky macs. This is a decidedly London selection – Joe Henderson’s ‘Sleighride’ has the distinct feel of Hampstead Heath rather than Lapland.
Homegrown rockers like Billy Fury and Adam Faith are found rubbing shoulders over a Christmas pint with John Barry and jazzers Kenny Baker and John Dankworth. Tricia Marks and Lyn Cornell provide festive glamour.
Saint Etienne member and pop historian Bob Stanley writes the sleevenotes. This is a soundtrack for the Hamley’s shop window and a proper 60s UK time capsule.
All UK recordings. The latest in the . Many tracks on CD for the first time.
Not the same old Christmas songs!
‘Saint Etienne Presents: Songs For A London Winter‘ is releases November 24 and is now available to pre-order in the Croydon Municipal Store!
Croydon Municipal is a label that loves to root through boxes of old 45s and 78s, give them a quick wash, package them together, and make them available again at a nice affordable price. We think of it as a public service.
It’s also intended as a way of curating the past, the early years of pop – almost everything is out there and available if you know which dusty rooms to look in, but you have to have the keys. Croydon Municipal is an attempt to make sense of the pre-Beatles era in a digital world.
Croydon Municipal’s speciality is the themed compilation. Ever wondered where you could get hold of British kitchen sink film themes? Not quite got a handle on Belgian Popcorn? Don’t know your Hoagy Carmichael from your Johnny Mercer? Croydon Municipal provides a way in, with informative sleevenotes and gorgeous artwork.
Come on in and take a look around the store…
